LidLock: Protecting every sip
Updated: 2 hours ago

Drink spiking is more common than most people think, and it happens to men and women. In the research we found, 70% of 18-to-24-year-olds had either seen it happen or had it happen to them. Many victims don't realize until it's too late, because the drugs cause confusion and memory loss.
Cup covers exist. But every one we found holds a single cover, so if your friend needs one, you're out of luck.
LidLock is a keychain made from bamboo filament that holds 25 compostable drink covers. Clip it to your bag or keys, pull out a cover for yourself, hand one to a friend. When you're done, the cover goes in the compost.
We built it for 18-to-34-year-olds who go out, starting in South Florida, where there are an estimated 1.5 million of them. Each LidLock costs $0.99 to make. We priced it at $8.99, with refills at $2.49.
We presented LidLock at this year's Social Entrepreneurship Symposium, and to a panel of judges for the Diamond Challenge. Unfortunately, this year we were not selected to move forward. The judges liked the product but recommended that we add a chemical indicator to the lid. Next time!
